The outdoor cinema takes place in In between Mõisavahe 34 and 35. The screening is free of charge!
Lasnamäe ⮕ San José ⮕ Soviet Estonian urban park planning ⮕ Lucerne ⮕ Bethlehem ⮕ Global tourism ⮕ Paris ⮕ Annelinn
The wandering festival UIT invites you to come and play in our sandbox for one evening by enjoying a journey with 8 different short films that will encourage you to see our shared urban environment in Tartu with fresh eyes. We’ll begin in Lasnamäe in the 1980s when the now-famous canal had yet to appear, but people were already settling on the local limestone. After that we’ll travel to the other side of the planet to Costa Rica, which might just be the most thrilling place in the world to ask for directions and to get lost in the process. Then we’ll make a brief stop in 1960s Soviet Estonia to reflect on whether anything has really changed in the past 60 years of urban planning. Afterwards we’ll look for an escape route from the Swiss welfare kiosk. Then we’ll cheer on four Palestinian boys trying to make their way to the beach in Bethlehem. We then take a glimpse into the vain nature of global tourism. After that we’ll hopefully be laughing on the streets of 1990s Paris before wrapping it all up in the homely suburbia of Annelinn.
Come Out and Play! is a free outdoor short film programme suitable for audiences of all ages. All films include Estonian and/or English subtitles. We will be screening 8 different short films with a total duration of approximately 90 minutes.
These films might make your way home a little more colourful or perhaps even inspire you to wander off from your chosen path. This programme has been put together in collaboration with a film festival called Valga Hot Shorts and has been curated by the main programme creator, Johannes Lõhmus.
SCREENED FILMS
Lasnamäe / Mark Soosaar / 10' / Estonian SSR 1985
“It is good to live for those who value their time.” Mark Soosaar's original, artistically inventive short documentary “Lasnamäe” that paints a unique, curved-mirror picture of Lasnamäe as a playground of all possibilities belongs to the goldmine of Estonian documentary filmmaking.
Addresses (Direcciones) / Maria Luisa Santos, Carlo Nasisse / 15' / Costa Rica, United States 2023
When was the last time you gave someone directions in your hometown? How do you navigate a city with no addresses? Welcome to San José, the capital of Costa Rica.
Park / Elbert Tuganov / 8' / USSR 1966
Do people need the city, or do the city need people? Elbert Tuganov's flat-puppet animation pokes fun at the obnoxiously stubborn bureaucracy that ignores city residents.
The Kiosk (Le Kiosque) / Anete Melece / 7' / Switzerland 2013
Anete Melece, a Latvian living in Switzerland, pokes fun at the local welfare state, but at the same time romantically celebrates the social side of shopping, which is never possible in an anonymous supermarket.
A Short Film About Kids / Ibrahim Handal / 10' / Palestine 2023
A film about simple things that these four boys from Bethlehem take for granted. How do you survive adolescence when you don't have the necessary documents to even get to the beach?
Been There / Corina Schwingruber Ilić / 10' / Switzerland 2023
“Place visited” is a fiasco created by sights and tourists, where the game is about who can capture the most incredible picture. How much travel do you need to satisfy your appetite and have you already become friends with your hometown?
Girls and Dogs (Des filles et Des chiens) / Sophie Filliėres / 6' / France 1991
Girlfriends on the streets of Paris. A bicycle, laughter and the game “Would you rather…”. A French short film classic from the early 1990s.
The House / Carl Olsson / 15' / Estonia, Sweden 2024
What happens between the walls of an apartment building with identical plans? “The House” is a self-expression of Annelinna and its residents in the form of a short documentary.
The project is supported by Estonian Film Institute and La Fémis.
