In the Land That Sings

The Land That Sings is a breathtaking musical epic that captures the spirit of resistance during Latvia’s national awakening. Directed by Māris Martinsons, the film features Estonian actor Priit Pius in a key role.

In 1873, just four years after the first Estonian Song Festival and inspired by its success, the brave men of the Young Latvians movement organized the first Latvian Song Festival under the watchful eye of oppressive censorship. A grand celebration with 1003 singers – both men and women – it changed the course of the nation's history. This is a powerful example of nonviolent resistance against imperial oppression, led by Latvian entrepreneurs, writers, publishers, and everyday villagers – including the passionate choir conductor Jurģis (played by Priit Pius).

Māris Martinsons, known for films such as Loss and Amaya, masterfully blends meticulously researched memories with real historical facts and fictionalized stories to create a musical uprising against the rule of the Russian Empire. The film’s stunning soundtrack features performances by some of the world’s finest symphony orchestras and choirs.
