Militantropos

An unsolicited war invades the daily lives and routines of people. Unasked war changes the lives of everyone. Meaningless war penetrates traditions, habits, valuable pleasures. Even soldiers return home for so-called vacations from the frontline. Then they embrace loved ones at a railway station until the next lucky encounter. There are many Ukrainian filmmakers currently at war. They not only defend the freedom of Ukraine, but film daily lives in the trenches, city streets in air alerts, abandoned fields, happier weddings, tearful farewells. They get permission from the Army to leave Ukraine and present films in international festivals. Three Ukrainian directors Yelizaveta, Alina and Simon took cameras to their missions to capture various normalities of brutal war and observe ordinary people in the uncertain emergency of devastating invasion. Fragmented, impactful, immersive film combines the Latin word for soldier (‘milit’) and the Greek word for human (‘anthropos’) to explain fractured Ukrainian lives while trying to adapt, survive, sometimes celebrate and maybe some day return back to normal.
