Inspired by last year’s big surprise in Estonian cinema – Sander Maran’s “Chainsaws Were Singing” – Elektriteater is dedicating this October to musical horror comedies.

While the “charm” of horror films usually lies in watching them alone, when even your otherwise cozy living room can turn into a source of unease in the glow of the flickering screen (Did something just make a sound from the other room?! Is the front door really locked? Maybe I’ll turn on the lights after all?) – this genre works best in a movie theater, laughing together with others or singing along to the songs.

From October 10–31, a selection of horror film classics both local and international will screen in Tartu Elektriteater. The program includes Brian De Palma’s “Phantom of the Paradise”, Frank Oz’s “Little Shop of Horrors”, “Cannibal! The Musical” by “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Helle Karis’s “Bumpy”, and Sander Maran’s “Chainsaws Were Singing”.

The program culminates with “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – a phenomenon whose popularity is hard to compare with any other film.
