Everything for Sale

An actor is missing. The film crew is not able to start without him. The actor's wife (E. Czyżewska) and the director's wife (B. Tyszkiewicz) are looking for him. Finally, they hear the news that the actor died tragically while jumping out of a moving train. Andrzej (A. Łapicki), the director, wonders how to complete the production. Is it possible to make a film about the void caused by the death? The director decides to cooperate with a new star - Daniel (D. Olbrychski). 

The self-referential film directed and scripted by Andrzej Wajda was an artistic form of processing the death of actor Zbigniew Cybulski, an icon of the Polish School. Cybulski had played in three films directed by Wajda: "Pokolenie", "Popiół i diament", "Niewinni czarodzieje". The role of Maciek Chełmicki in "Popiół i diament" created the myth of a romantic hero, which remained a reference point for all the subsequent roles of the artist. Cybulski's name or surname is not mentioned in the film – it was not necessary due to the fact that everyone vividly remembered the circumstances of his tragic death at the Wrocław railway station on January 8, 1967. To enhance the effect of relating fiction to reality, the characters were named after actors. The film shows Andrzej Wróblewski's paintings, such as "Rozstrzelanie" (1949). We learn about the method of searching for an artistic form of the film titled "Wszystko na sprzedaż" thanks to Jerzy Ziarnik's report titled "Na planie". It creates another dimension of the self-referentiality of Wajda's work.
